Gel Nail Manicure Aftercare: Dip Powder With Tips (60-mins) and the First 48 Hours
By Chic Nails and Beauty Bar | July 15, 2026
Right off SE University Avenue near Waukee Town Center and City Hall

If you just left us feeling that “wonderful service and dip” kind of happy, keep it simple for the next two days. Our #1 rule: avoid soaking and heavy hand use for the first 24 to 48 hours. That’s the window where tip edges and adhesive lines are easiest to stress, especially if you’re doing dishes, deep cleaning, or pool time in Waukee’s hot July months.
Quick start: Keep hands out of long water soaks, oil your cuticles daily, and don’t pick or pry at the tips. Those three habits are what help sets last 3 to 4 weeks for a lot of our regulars.
Dip Powder With Tips is our 60-minute extension service ($55). We apply tips for length, then build strength with dip powder so your set feels lightweight but tough, with calcium and vitamin fortification built into the system.
First 0 to 48 hours: keep the tip edges sealed
This is the time to baby your hands a little. Dip is durable, but the fastest way to cause lifting is a bunch of water exposure plus pressure on the free edge.
Do this right away
- Keep showers short and skip long baths the first day if you can.
- Use gloves for dishes, cleaning, or any job where your hands sit in water.
- Apply cuticle oil twice a day. Morning and before bed is perfect.
- Be gentle with pressure. Think opening soda tabs, pulling laundry, or lifting heavy bags.
Avoid these for 24 to 48 hours
- Soaking hands in hot water, especially while scrubbing.
- Hot tubs, pools, and long swim sessions. Chlorine and heat plus water time can stress the edges.
- Using your nails as tools. No prying, scraping, or “just this once.”
- Peeling at a corner if you feel a catch. That’s how a tiny lift turns into a full pop-off.
If you’re coming to us from West Des Moines, Urbandale, Clive, Grimes, Johnston, or Adel and you know you’ve got a busy couple days, tell us before we start. We’ll talk through length and shape choices that tend to hold up better for your routine.
Days 3 to 7: keep them looking “kills the shape” fresh
After a few days, most people feel like they can do everything again. You usually can. But this is where little habits decide if your set stays looking crisp for weeks or starts catching at the cuticle line.
Keep using cuticle oil twice a day. It’s simple, but it helps the skin stay soft so you don’t start picking at dry edges. If you garden like some of our regulars, gloves are your best friend. Dirt, moisture, and pressure under the tips are a lot, even for a tough dip set.
And watch your “tool” moments. Opening boxes, scraping labels, digging for keys in a tight purse, those are the sneaky ones. Dip powder can absolutely last 3 weeks to a month for many people. The ones who get that kind of wear time are usually the ones who stop using the nail edge for leverage.
Waukee seasonal note: Summer pool season means extra rinsing and handwashing. Winter chores mean dry skin and more catching. Both are fixable with oil and a little protection.
Cuticle oil, gentle soap, and one rule about removers
You don’t need a drawer full of products to keep Dip Powder With Tips looking good. Here’s what we actually want you doing between now and your fill.
- Cuticle oil: twice daily. If you only do one thing, do this.
- Hand lotion after washing: dry skin leads to picking, and picking leads to lifting.
- Gentle soap: super harsh degreasers can leave skin tight and flaky.
- If you polish at home: we generally recommend a non-acetone remover for taking off color, since acetone can dry out the surrounding skin fast. If you’re not sure what you used, bring it in and we’ll take a look.
One more tip that helps a lot: after you oil, rub it in around the cuticle and along the sidewalls. Don’t just drop oil on top and walk away.
If a tip lifts or cracks: don’t peel, come see us
A tiny lift happens sometimes, especially if you bumped a nail or your hands were in water a lot. What matters is what you do next.
Don’t peel it off. Peeling can pull off layers of your natural nail and make the next set harder to keep strong. If you feel a snag, you can lightly buff the sharp edge just enough so it stops catching, then keep that nail as dry as possible until we repair it.
We’re right in the SE University Avenue corridor near Waukee Town Center, so quick fixes are usually easy to squeeze in. And if you work nearby or commute through Waukee, it’s often faster to let us repair one nail than to try to “DIY” it and end up with a bigger break.
A real-life pattern we see: People who pick at one lifted corner usually lose the whole extension. People who leave it alone and come in for a repair keep the rest of the set looking great.
If you want a deeper rundown before your appointment, read what to expect from your first Dip Powder With Tips (60-mins). If you’re booking because other sets have chipped or popped early, Dip Powder With Tips for chipped nails explains why this method holds up so well.
Fill timing (usually 2 to 3 weeks), and when 4 weeks makes sense
Most people feel best on a 2 to 3 week fill schedule, mainly because of growth at the cuticle. Some of our dip regulars can stretch closer to 4 weeks, especially if they’re careful and their nails grow slower. If you’re hard on your hands, think gardening, cleaning, lifting, then staying closer to that 2 to 3 week mark usually prevents breaks.
When you wait too long, the structure shifts forward as your nail grows. That can make tips feel more “lever-y, ” which is when people snap a nail doing something normal, like buckling a seatbelt.
If you’re planning events, use this quick timing guide
- 1 to 3 days before: best for photos, parties, and weddings.
- 1 to 2 weeks before: great if you want time to adjust to new length.
- 3 to 4 weeks after: plan a fill so you don’t lose length right when you need it.
